Learning Support Assistant

Temporary Learning Support Assistant

Two-year fixed contract, term-time only, 39 weeks per year

Full-time, 36 hours per week

Starting as soon as possible or negotiable

£31,115 – £33,826 pro-rata per annum inclusive of London Weighting
 
We are looking for an experienced and committed Learning Support Assistant who has worked with students in an education setting or in the voluntary sector to join our friendly Student Services Team. This is a temporary post, term-time only. The post will run for the duration of the A Level course (two years), in the first instance, until the end of the summer term 2028. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a supportive and successful department. The postholder will provide 1:1 support to students to help them with their overall development and academic work whilst supporting their physical and mental wellbeing in a college environment.

The salary will be in the range of point 10 - 13 on the sixth form college support staff salary scale, which is currently £27,733 - £30,444 depending on experience, plus £3,382 Outer London Weighting pro-rata per annum. As this is a term-time only post, the actual salary (based on full time equivalent), will be in the range of £25,929 – £28,188 gross per annum. The pay includes an additional week to cover a pro-rata of 8 bank holidays.

Job profile:
The postholder will be a member of the student services team and will be working closely with their line manager, the Additional Learning Support Coordinator. The postholder will provide 1:1 support and small group support to students to help them with their overall development and academic work whilst supporting their physical and mental wellbeing in a college environment. You will be working closely with students who have EHCPs and complex support needs, this may include students with sensory, physical difficulties, mental health and learning differences.

Main responsibilities:
• To provide 1:1 support to identified students with a range of difficulties including medical, visual/hearing impairments, autism, ADHD and learning difficulties.
• To support the individual students in and outside of the classroom, throughout the
college buildings and during lunchtimes where appropriate. This may also involve support accessing the toilets.
• To complete initial assessment interviews with students who disclose a learning need and update teaching staff regarding support needs.
• To provide 1:1 academic support for identified students with specific needs and physical disabilities.
• To attend to the social, emotional and physical needs of the students, to ensure their wellbeing is maintained.
• To run small group support sessions as required
• To follow a care plan as appropriate following advice from professionals.
• You may be required to adapt materials for use in the classroom, checking all aspects of their learning is accessible.
• To attend EHCP annual reviews and monitor progress of their EHCP outcomes.
• To have an input into the learning and progress needs of future planning and provision for the students and contribute to the support plans and reviews.
• To work collaboratively on a continuous basis with the ALS Coordinator, the student services team and all relevant parties to understand the needs of the student to support them appropriately.
• To keep the ALS Coordinator regularly informed about the students’ progress.
• To support the ALS Coordinator and student services team with administrative tasks.
• To liaise closely with teaching staff, personal tutors and progress managers with updates about the students’ progress and to collate relevant teaching materials and resources when needed.
• To provide input into the planning and evaluation of learning activities to enable teaching staff to make informed decisions when developing their plans.
• To contribute to the development of provision of programmes and workshops (for teachers and relevant staff) which support the students’ additional needs
• To attend meetings and participate in staff training events and to maintain relevant skills and knowledge as appropriate.
• To record and update student progress records.
• Contacting parents/carers and external agencies regarding student issues.
• Making referrals to other members of the student services team where appropriate.
• Supervising groups of students in the learning zones during unscheduled time.
• Invigilating during exams, including acting as a reader and/or a scribe.
• Receiving updates on skills and knowledge relevant to the post as appropriate.
• Maintaining awareness of the requirements of the college Health and Safety Policy and adhering to health and safety rules in the workplace.
• Ensuring adherence of the college General Data Protection Regulation policy.
• Demonstrating a commitment to the college Single Equality Policy.
• Undertaking such other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post as may be required by the Principal and senior leadership team.
Essential requirements:

Qualifications and experience
• A levels or other level 3 qualifications
• GCSE in English and Maths or other level 2 equivalent
• Experience in working with students with ALS needs and disabilities

Other skills, knowledge and abilities
• Ability to support students who are taking A level courses
• Ability to use record keeping systems and be computer literate
• Understanding of the academic demands placed on students in a sixth form college
• Ability to communicate with sixth form students and staff across all levels
• Ability to deal with students’ physical, emotional and behavioural needs as well as provide individual support as appropriate
• Ability to solve problems and take action when appropriate

Desirable requirements:
• Experience of working in education or the voluntary sector
• First Aid qualification
• Relevant NVQ3 or equivalent or three years full-time relevant experience
• SEN qualification
• Ability to offer personal care to students
