French Language Assistant

£49,708 inclusive per annum, pro-rata
 
Part-time, term-time only (36 weeks)
 
The Trust is seeking a French Language Assistant to support A level students. This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic native or near-native speaker to support the languages department in developing students’ confidence, fluency and cultural understanding in the French language. This will be through high-quality speaking practice, collaborative teaching and authentic cultural engagement.
 
This is a part-time (0.308), permanent position. The postholder will be required to work two days per week (14.4 hours per week). The role runs over a 36-week period from 1 October until 31 May each year with pay spread equally over 12 months. In addition, 5 days as compensation for 5 bank holidays will also be paid, pro rata.
 
The salary will be on the sixth form college support staff salary scale at Point 28, currently £46,326 plus London Weighting £3,382 per annum, pro-rata. The actual salary will be £15,327 per annum.

Purpose of the Role
The purpose of the role is to support the Modern Languages Department in developing students’ confidence, fluency and cultural understanding in the French language through high-quality speaking practice, collaborative teaching and authentic cultural engagement in preparation for A level speaking exams.
 
Key Responsibilities
• To plan and deliver engaging conversation sessions for students, working with individuals, pairs and small groups under the guidance of the head of department and teaching staff.
• To support students in developing confidence, accuracy and spontaneity in spoken French, particularly in preparation for public examinations.
• To contribute to students’ enjoyment of language learning and encourage active participation in oral communication activities.
• To work collaboratively with teachers in lessons where appropriate, including team teaching and supporting classroom activities.
• To support students across a range of abilities, providing encouragement for less confident learners while also stretching and challenging more able students.
• To develop students’ awareness and understanding of French culture and contemporary life through authentic materials, discussion and enrichment activities.
• To assist in the preparation and adaptation of teaching and learning resources, including authentic texts, audio materials and online content.
• To contribute to the development of departmental resources and digital learning platforms where appropriate.
• To support students in preparation for French A Level speaking examinations through practice and feedback.
• To assist teachers with monitoring students’ oral progress and, where appropriate, contribute to assessment activities.
• To maintain accurate records of student attendance and communicate any concerns promptly to teaching staff.
• To uphold the policies and values of the Trust, contributing positively to the wider life of the department and college community.
Essential Requirements
• Be a native or near-native speaker of French.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Be enthusiastic, reliable and well organised.
• Good IT skills including a working knowledge of MS Word and Excel.
• Be able to work effectively with young people aged 16–18.
• A positive and encouraging manner.
• The ability to work well within a team and independently.
• Show initiative and flexibility in supporting departmental needs.
• Have an interest in education and language learning.
• A commitment to safeguarding the interests and needs of young people.
• An understanding of and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in practice.
 
Desirable Requirements
• Experience of working in a school/college environment.
