Casual Exam Invigilator

Casual Exam Invigilator (Short-term) 
 
Starting from 22 April 2026 until 19 June 2026

£14.80 per hour plus holiday pay
 
We are looking for enthusiastic and organised people to work as part-time temporary invigilators during our busy summer exam period. You will report to the Exams Manager and the Assistant Principal, Curriculum, who will offer training and guidance before you start the role. We are looking for people who are able to work in what can be a stressful environment with a great deal of calm and empathy. The role involves distributing exam papers, dealing with candidates’ queries, supervising candidates at all times, completing and signing attendance registers and checking seating plans. Please be aware that this role will also include standing for long periods and carrying bulky exam papers to and from allocated rooms.
 
The rate of pay will be £14.80 per hour, plus 12.07% holiday pay per hour. This will be calculated in line with timesheets submitted and will be paid as a separate amount.
 
Please note, this is a part-time role. Exams are either morning or afternoon sessions and can vary in length of time. There is no guarantee of work every day as sessions are distributed amongst the invigilator team, in line with availability.

Main duties and responsibilities
 
Invigilators have a key role in upholding the integrity of the external examination process and are required to conduct examinations in accordance with JCQ regulations and Woodhouse College instructions. You will be working as part of a team of invigilators under the supervision of exams personnel. The working days will vary according to candidates’ availability and mutual agreement; the number of hours worked in a session will vary on any given day according to the length of the particular exam/s but will not exceed four hours. Lunch breaks (unpaid) will be provided when working both morning and afternoon sessions. 
 
Before exams
 
• To report to exams personnel prior to each exam session
• To take exam papers, stationery and other exam equipment as required to the allocated exam room
• To keep exam papers and materials secure at all times
• To ensure exam rooms are set out as per seating plan and to JCQ requirements
• To admit candidates into exam rooms
• To identify, seat, and instruct candidates in the conduct of their exams
• To distribute exam papers and materials to candidates
• To deal with candidate queries
 
During exams
 
• To supervise candidates at all times and be vigilant throughout exams
• To keep disruption to a minimum
• To deal with emergencies and irregularities effectively
• To record/report any irregularities
• To complete and sign attendance registers as well as the seating plan
• To deal with candidate queries
 
After exams
 
• To collect exam scripts and take to designated secure room for checking and packing up ready for courier collection
• To return other exam materials to secure storage
• To dismiss candidates from the exam room
 
Other
 
• To complete mandatory online training prior to commencing the role if not already in place (unpaid)
• To attend in-house training, refresher or review sessions as required
• To undertake, where required and where able, other duties requested by exams personnel, for example, supervision of clash candidates between exams
Essential Requirements:
 
• Good administrative and IT skills

• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Confidence to manage a room full of candidates effectively
• Ability to empathise with and reassure students sitting exams (some of whom are often very anxious)
• Excellent team-working skills
• Understanding of and commitment to equality and diversity in practice
• Commitment to safeguarding the interests and needs of young people.
• Willingness to undertake relevant training as required and a DBS check.
 
Desirable:
 
• Experience / knowledge of examination procedures, regulations and systems
• Experience of working with young people
• General understanding of health and safety issues in the workplace
• A valid DBS certificate subscribed to the DBS online update service
